Arriving in Canada at the turn of the century, the Shumiatcher were persecuted Jews, hounded out of Russia. Despite being urged to change their name to Smith by a Canadian immigration officer, the Shumiatchers succeeded in building a new life for themselves, and established a community that continues to thrive in the Canadian West.
