I often wonder if this or On The Beach by Nevil Shute is more accurate. I tend to think the latter. But both are good.

Classic read and likely accurate for it's day...however, our understanding since shows that nuclear war would have far graver effects than depicted here. For something more akin to that check out The Road.

Good classic read for fans of post apocalyptic fiction. Starts off very well. More of a view into the cold war missile crisis fears than a real survival story, although it is that, too. I enjoyed it.

I seriously love this book! It really gave me insight on how people actually felt during the Cold War. Before reading this, I hadn't actually realized the enormity of the destruction an atomic bomb could cause. This book felt so real. I found myself cataloging my survival skills and wondering how we could survive without electricity. Is Cleveland an important target? I found myself watching for mushroom clouds. Wow. The best part of this book is the hope. Even with their way of life destroyed, they start to rebuild. And hey! They start homeschooling!

This book is well worth the time if you enjoy post-apocalyptic themes. You wonder how many differnt people have drawn from this book. I think of the creators of the TV Series Jericho to the video game Fallout. I would definatly recommend.

Alas, Babylon is the prototype for post-apocalyptic fiction. Although a bit dated, the characters and survival situations still ring true.
