A boy named Kevin escapes his gadget-obsessed parents to join a band of time-traveling dwarves. Armed with a map stolen from the Supreme Being, they plunder treasure from Napoleon and Agamemnon; but Evil is watching their every move. A giddy fairy tale, a revisionist history lesson, and a satire on technology gone awry.

An early product of Terry Gilliam, this showcases his extraordinary imagination. The plot? A bunch of dwarf workers for "The Lord" mess up but find a map of the universe which is full of holes. They use the holes to jump into different times in earth's history including the fanciful. On the way, they pick up a young rebellious boy (Kevin) who witnesses history first hand ... but not quite the history we came to know. Robin Hood, Napoleon, Agamemnon are all there but they have different agendas and situations. Doesn't matter. The dwarves all snatch up whatever booty they can muster and steal away through their hole. Its all fun and games until Evil (David Warner) traps them and tries to use their idea to take things over. Will Evil prevail? Spoiler Alert!! Gilliam uses the cliche plot vehicle of Deus Ex Machina (LITERALLY!). Still a great family movie with some really funny scenes ("Little People! Hitting each other! That's what's funny!") Gilliam's humor became dark after this effort.

After all these years, I like this film, but the ending still baffles me. Not sure if Michael and Terry had a table waiting at the pub while writing the last act. Other than that, it's a fun watch.

This movie was entertaining and had some very funny parts in it at times. It is a kids movie at heart.
To be honest it started losing me towards the end, but it did pay off! Funny stuff from some of Monty Python here. Give it a chance! Or don't, it's your decision!

I'm with the commenter alpaca85, whose remarks you can scroll down to.

I recall being underimpressed with Time Bandits when it was new, and I am even less impressed now. While it presents no particular difficulties plotwise--it's a picaresque that tumbles through time, always suspiciously landing in the vicinity of a major event played out by major players (though having Agamemnon battle the Minotaur in the desert is wrong in so many all-too-Hollywood ways)--it isn't very funny or sympathy-arousing. Instead of absorbingly complex in its settings and effects, it's just messy-looking (which is always director Gilliam's bete noire). Indeed, it already looks as rickety as a Golden Age adventure fantasy, such as the 1940 Thief of Baghdad. Music and songs are more annoying than fetching, and too much of the mise-en-scene screams out that the imagination behind it an animator's. And I LIKE Terry Gilliam! Not TB, though. --Ray Olson

Excellent film by Terry Gilliam- in fact I'd rank it in his top three films.

John Cleese as Robin Hood & Sean Connery in his best performance since Goldfinger, two great actors in a hard to watch family film that I recommend for adults & teenagers.

At the top of my all time favorite movies list! The STARS! The MUSIC! The ludicrousness!

On my list of top 10 favourite movies of all time! Yes, some of the scenes are cheesy (anything with Evil in it), but those are totally outweighed by the rest of this hilarious movie... twists and turns galore, idiosyncratic
characters, a sense of real fun and the joy of childhood's imagination. A true family movie that will delight everyone from toddlers to grandparents. Highly, highly recommended!

Some similar humor to Monty Python (and some of the cast!), I was worried I wouldn't understand it with accents/country and age. But hilarious. Also good (and applicable) satire about technology and imagination. I feel Bill and Ted, History of the World, etc. took from this but I'd have to check dates...
