Hailed as "superlative" (Publishers Weekly, starred review), this novel from #1 New York Times best-selling author Jim Butcher finds magical detective Harry Dresden investigating the killings of minor wizards in Chicago. Most disturbing for Harry, his own brother is a prime suspect. "Butcher puts the characters in a lot of danger, creates appalling moral choices for them, and spins an excellent noirish detective yarn in a well-crafted, supernaturally charged setting." –Booklist, starred review

I've been waiting for weeks on hold for access to this AUDIOBOOK. I want only the audiobook format because I love James Marsters' voice acting for this series. Imagine my disappointment when what showed up for me was an ebook (online print format), NOT the AUDIOBOOK I had requested. The really strange thing is that the SFPL record for this title showed only 2 actual print books and 2 audiobook copies when I requested it. There was no mention of an ebook, yet ebook is what I got. Now when I search a different way (by title vs by author), I see there are multiple entries for this title, under different formats and years. Very confusing.

Is the book any good? I have no idea. I don't have time to read it. I did have time to LISTEN to the AUDIOBOOK I requested.

[Edited to add:] I would buy it, but it appears to be held captive by Amazon's Audible ($14.95 per month fee or $29 for the audiobook; no CDs offered). But then I discovered that some kind soul has uploaded the entire work to YouTube! I'll look for the next one (that has a 6 month waiting list) on YouTube, too. So far, what I've heard on YouTube is pretty good.

I'll admit to being more of a James Marsters fan than a Jim Butcher fan. James's voice work is a real treat, enlivening Butcher's sometimes pedestrian prose (I want to strike the words glowered and shrugged from Butcher's vocabulary). I do like the interactions between Murphy and Harry in this one. I'm listening to these books in the order written. So far, both Butcher's storytelling and Marsters' voice acting gets better with each succeeding work.
