A New York Times bestseller

"Don't miss this dazzling tour de force."--Katherine Applegate, Newbery Medal winning author of The One and Only Ivan

This gripping novel about survival and family is based on the real story of one wolf's incredible journey to find a safe place to call home. Illustrated throughout, this irresistible tale by award-winning author Rosanne Parry is for fans of Sara Pennypacker's Pax and Katherine Applegate's The One and Only Ivan.

Swift, a young wolf cub, lives with his pack in the mountains learning to hunt, competing with his brothers and sisters for hierarchy, and watching over a new litter of cubs. Then a rival pack attacks, and Swift and his family scatter.

Alone and scared, Swift must flee and find a new home. His journey takes him a remarkable one thousand miles across the Pacific Northwest. The trip is full of peril, and Swift encounters forest fires, hunters, highways, and hunger before he finds his new home.

Inspired by the extraordinary true story of a wolf named OR-7 (or Journey), this irresistible tale of survival invites readers to experience and imagine what it would be like to be one of the most misunderstood animals on earth. This gripping and appealing novel about family, courage, loyalty, and the natural world is for fans of Fred Gipson's Old Yeller and Katherine Applegate's Endling.

Includes black-and-white illustrations throughout and a map as well as information about the real wolf who inspired the novel.

This book has captivated our whole family!

A vivid, expansive journey of a young wolf who is separated from his pack. Wander, as the young wolf becomes known, narrates his journey with a full-formed voice and persistent yearning for companionship. The text is complemented by realistic illustrations by Mónica Armiño throughout. The black and white drawings enhance some of the most action-packed moments and also depict many of the species Wander meets. The finished text will come with backmatter. Since the Advanced Reader's Copy didn't, I read the Wikipedia page of OR-7, the real life Wander. I learned that OR-7 was the first wolf in western Oregon since 1947! I expect that A Wolf Called Wander will be a great launching point for elementary and middle school classes to talk about the environment, endangered animals, and the challenges around making a home for predators in relatively more developed areas. Recommended for young fans of suspenseful reads, animal survival, and the wild.

This was a great story and it's even better when you find out it's based on a real wolf. For anyone who loves animal stories, give this one a try.

A Wolf Called Wander is based on the true story of OR-7, or Journey, a wolf who traveled over 1,000 miles in the Pacific northwest in search of home. In this tale, Swift is the wolf determined to survive. The fastest of all his siblings, he dreams of leading a pack of his own. But after rivals threaten his family, Swift finds himself alone in the chaos. Facing hunters, highways, forest fires, and hunger, the wolf journeys relentlessly, longing for family and the mountains of home. Inspiring reverence for nature and wildlife, this is a story so powerful it gave a wolf his name.

A wolf finds himself alone when a rival pack annihilates his family. This is the story of his journey to find a place of his own and establish his own pack. View the world through his eyes as he adapts to life on his own and navigates mountains, prairie and desert. Often demonized, the wolf gets an empathetic presentation along with beautiful illustrations. I received a paperback ARC from the publisher which unfortunately did not include the end notes with the true story behind the book. Would definitely recommend to animal lovers and fans of books like Pax and The One and Only Ivan.

A touching story. Beautifully told in a way that describes how the world behaves, how it smells, and looks all from the perspective of a child as he finds his way to adulthood. It raises some great reflection points about how the lessons that we are taught growing up, mixed with the things that we learn through our experiences in life. These are the things that shape us into the wolves, or people, that we grow into. I highly recommend this story!
