Couldn’t finish it, but appreciate it as a cult classic. Dependable plot, dated, silly.

Sheer classic!

Great movie. Still stands up well today and delivers some genuinely spooky scenes. Definitely check this out if you're a horror fan.

Yep. The trees in this film were certainly 100% wood, alright. And, on a whole, I'd say that they made much better actors than did the likes of that complete piece of wood, Bruce Campbell._____ Ok. You can call me "Mr. Jaded" if you like, but, from where I was sitting, this original version of The Evil Dead (that's "TED", for short) certainly didn't come anywhere near to living up to all of the preposterous praise and overbaked hype that's been heaped upon it over these past thirty-something years._____ And, hey, excuse me if I've suddenly forgotten how to laugh, but I'd sure like to know what the heck people are talking about when they refer to the so-called "comedy" factor of TED._____ And besides TED being a notorious film for delivering far too many red herrings for its own good, it also had a terrible knack for giving away its "shocking" surprises long before they actually took place._____ All-in-all - The original Evil Dead was something of a major disappointment, in my books. I didn't hate this movie, but, with that said, I certainly wouldn't recommend it to anyone unless they were at the fall-down stage of being drunk.

The original that has been a cult favourite for decades, THE EVIL DEAD is a show of what you can do with a little money and a camera. And I mean a little money. Director Sam Raimi and his team managed to move mountains with their meager budget. Frankly, I think major kudos are owed to the film's single make-up artist, one guy who did all the cosmetic effects required to make the whole cast look, well, evil and dead. In the end, it's just a kids-in-a-cabin-in-the-woods horror flick, stale in about the same time as the audience's popcorn, but for horror aficionados, it is a landmark film. Back in 1981, this film had to find its way through its fans, considering distributors thought it was too scary, violent, and gruesome; now, it's small beans in comparison to the chainsaw porn horror movies the industry pumps out on a monthly basis. For someone interested to see how far we've come or how much you can do with very little cash, THE EVIL DEAD is for you. I sort of recommend it -- with some reservations.

At the time of the original release, I thought this was a terrifying movie. Years later, I find that it still is. Great film, remade as Evil Dead 2. And another remake (or reboot as they call it now) is coming out soon. It will be interesting if the remake will have the same effect on me.

Definitely a cult classic. Horror films have come a long way since 1981 - to think film distributors would not pick up this movie due to its graphic terror and violence. Wonder what these film distributors would have thought of the Saw franchise?
