"Beautiful, mysterious and deeply satisfying." --Rebecca Stead, Newbery Medal-winning author of When You Reach Me and Goodbye Stranger

The world tilted for Elodee this year, and now it's impossible for her to be the same as she was before. Not when her feelings have such a strong grip on her heart. Not when she and her twin sister, Naomi, seem to be drifting apart. So when Elodee's mom gets a new job in Eventown, moving seems like it might just fix everything.

Indeed, life in Eventown is comforting and exciting all at once. Their kitchen comes with a box of recipes for Elodee to try. Everyone takes the scenic way to school or work--past rows of rosebushes and unexpected waterfalls. On blueberry-picking field trips, every berry is perfectly ripe.

Sure, there are a few odd rules, and the houses all look exactly alike, but it's easy enough to explain--until Elodee realizes that there are only three ice cream flavors in Eventown. Ever. And they play only one song in music class. Everything may be "even" in Eventown, but is there a price to pay for perfection--and pretending?

Opinion

From Library Staff

Looking for a fresh start, Elodee and her family move to Eventown where the weather is always sunny, the food is always delicious, and poverty is unheard of. But is it really as perfect as it appears? Recommended for ages 9 and up.

Mysterious and captivating. Something is going on behind all the matching roses and perfect non-melty ice cream. When a few rebelious citizens give Elodee a chance to find out the truth about everyone's memories about the past, including her's, she seems to be on her own. Namoi just wants to finally fit in, so Elodee has to rely on the help of her new friend, Veena. Can the girls find out the truth before the town spirals out of control?
Very interesting read.

Beautiful and moving. I loved reading about this perfect town and watching it change during the story through the eyes of Elodee. You may guess what the “secret” is, but don’t let it stop you from finishing this.

I really love this book. There are certain little phrases the author incorporates that is like candy for the mind. The lesson in this story is meaningful and important to us all.

Elodee's family is moving to a new town to get a "fresh start," but what will they leave behind? A thoughtful, kid-appropriate introduction to dystopian stories that explore the ideas of perfection, conformity and happiness.

Sort of a mild-mannered version of the dystopia in The Giver and Wrinkle in Time, with an added layer of the evils of conformity, forgetting, and childhood depression.
