"On the margins of Tokyo, a dysfunctional band of outsiders are united by fierce loyalty, a penchant for petty theft, and playful grifting. When the young son is arrested, secrets are exposed that upend their tenuous, below-the-radar existence and test their quietly radical belief that it is love--not blood--that defines a family."--Container.

Hirokazu Koreeda’s ability to marvel at everyday life is as keen as ever in this gentle heart-tugger which challenges the idea of what constitutes “family”. One of Japan’s greatest living writer/directors, Koreeda plays his cards with restraint and detached compassion as he explores the tiny bonds and small tyrannies that go into making a family unit regardless of whether its members are tied by blood or by mutual need. A deeply human film that never shies away from sad truths yet still manages to soften those hard edges with warmth and humour.

A true masterpiece of Japanese cinema. Kore-eda has never been better. It defines the highest meanings of life and purpose.

This movie examines what it means to be a family and to live outside the traditional norms of society. The characters are thieves, grifters, and charlatans, but the film does not pass judgement, presenting them as they are and leaving the audience to draw its own conclusions.

I love foreign films because they are so unpredictable; one never knows where it'll end up since they don't usually follow any perceivable formula. High marks for acting and the gritty depiction of dysfunctional living and petty crime. And that's before we find out the nature of secrets that worm their way to the surface, changing everyone's lives yet again. Recommended.

A sweet, bittersweet, mellow, charming movie with little poignant patches of joy and sorrow - - a masterpiece, says a blurb, and any sane viewer would have to agree!
I thank everyone involved with the production of this great movie!

Koreeda explores what families are again in this film about a family that makes ends meet through shoplifting. Excellent performances by Lily Franky and Sakura Ando as well as by the great Kirin Kiki in her last performance before her death. The children, especially Jyo Kairi, are wonderful. Highly recommended.
