Opinion

From Library Staff

The best animated feature this year is a heartfelt story about the dog-eat-dog world of a future ruled by cat-lovers.

The new Wes Anderson movie is a quirky tale of dogs and underdogs in the feline future of Japan. From the maker of the 2009 adaptation of Roald Dahl's Fantastic Mr. Fox.

Good movie but I preferred the Fantastic Mr. Fox.

Deadpan humor and homages to Kurosawa mark this insanely-detailed stop-motion animation romp, in which every frame somehow manages to look like traditional Japanese art. This was a lot of fun, and buried somewhere in it is the fact that the sinister plot that runs the whole thing is actually a battle in the never-ending war between dogs and CATS (which don't appear in the movie!). The story is set in a Japan that is not exactly the past, present, or future, but an amalgam of all three -- with taiko music and kabuki in prominence along with high-tech and steampunk gadgets which don't ever seem to work correctly. The humans speak in Japanese (untranslated, but easy to interpret even if one has no knowledge of the language) while the dogs speak in English -- which adds another layer of silliness, especially since this was produced in Britain. "Beware: I bite."

.
So much to dislike about this, so little time. All the quirky nonsense really takes away from the story - so much so that I turned it off after 20 minutes:
- The animation resembles a student project.
- Japanese without subtitles (you can still easily understand what's going on but it's still annoying).
- Is this for adults or kids? (There's a lot of questionable language for kids)

Wes Anderson is very much capable of taking adults back in their childhood era.
Great animated film.
Yes, it’s different and it’s not following the mainstream ordinary Hollywood blockbusters.

Weird and hard to watch. My dog didn’t like it and neither did I!

Isle of Dogs is very style over substance, but when the film is made by one of cinema's preeminent stylists, the outstanding visuals end up overriding the need for deep emotional investment. That's not to say this is a shallow movie, because you do end up caring about this ragtag group of dogs imprisoned on a garbage island, but it's so consistently fun to look at that you would be forgiven for only going skin deep.

"I love dogs"

I love Wes Anderson but I'll be honest and say that I turned this one off. To me, it seemed too similar to Fantastic Mr. Fox and didn't bring much new to the table. I think I also have become very spoiled by Laika's very innovative stop motion animation and to me, this pales in comparison.

Much more complex than “The Fantastic Mr. Fox”! I haven’t generally been a fan of Wes Anderson’s live action films (although I did really like “Moonrise Kingdom”) but I have really loved his animated films.
