Ivan is an easygoing gorilla. Living at the Exit 8 Big Top Mall and Video Arcade, he has grown accustomed to humans watching him through the glass walls of his domain. He rarely misses his life in the jungle. In fact, he hardly ever thinks about it at all. Instead, Ivan thinks about TV shows he's seen and about his friends Stella, an elderly elephant, and Bob, a stray dog. But mostly Ivan thinks about art and how to capture the taste of a mango or the sound of leaves with color and a well-placed line. Then he meets Ruby, a baby elephant taken from her family, and she makes Ivan see their home—and his own art—through new eyes. When Ruby arrives, change comes with her, and it's up to Ivan to make it a change for the better. Katherine Applegate blends humor and poignancy to create Ivan's unforgettable first-person narration in a story of friendship, art, and hope.

It's so sad, I just couldn't get through it. :(

The audiobook version of this book is fantastic. This book is completely narrated in first-person by Ivan, a captive gorilla. Adam Grupper reads the story with a slow, gruff cadence, which gives vibrant life to Ivan's simplistic, naive and compassionate personality. It's funny, it's sad, and there are a lot of very powerful themes throughout. At just under 4 hours, this story is well worth the time.

I read this book in grade three for a book club and I loved it so so so much. I have read the book at least four times and cried when you know who and what happened ahem no spoilers here, three times. Tragic.

This is a beautiful story of life struggles, friendship and being true to oneself. My 9 year old and I were captivated by the intriguing tale beautifully written and appropriately narrated. Free of pop culture references, this is a timeless tale that you can safely play without worrying about anything inappropriate. Please get more materials like this one for the library!

a great read with a Gorilla as the narrator. It makes you think about the animals in some of the awful ways they are kept in cages and alone. But it has a nice ending and very nice character develoment. I would recommend this to be read by any age.
