Now that I'm thinking about it...this police procedural prequel is most decidedly NOT my favorite followup to the excellent and groundbreaking Silence of the Lambs. Hannibal, the official sequel to silence of the lambs, is much more surprising and fun. This one was just bleak police stuff.

This is a Manhunter remake. I believe this one is the better of the two (though a true Hannibal can would watch both, as well as read the book as well). Classic Lectar.

Good movie.

I love the original Manhunter, and own a copy. I also love Red Dragon and think both are perfect movies in the Hannibal series. I enjoyed Red Dragon as it showed a bit more of the Hannibal and Will relationship and Hannibal's life before his capture. The movie is entertaining every time I re-watch the chilling scenes. I wish Thomas Harris had written more books about Will Graham I enjoyed the book and it is my favorite in the Hannibal series. If you have not read it, and like the movie, read the book.

I have to agree with other comments that the original movie, 'Manhunter', was my fav. However, this isn't completely without redeeming values.. Edward Norton was a bit more likeable than William Peterson at my house.. the tension is strung out well and we get a glimpse at the background events haunting our hero in this version. I did really like the original Hannibal (Manhunter) .. sure felt like it was the model used for Silence of the Lambs and subsequent Hannibal movies.

This is a 2002 American psychological horror film directed by Brett Ratner, based on the novel of the same name by Thomas Harris, featuring psychiatrist and serial killer Dr. Hannibal Lecter.
It is a prequel to "The Silence of the Lambs (1991)" and "Hannibal (2001)."
It was originally adapted into the film "Manhunter (1986)."
I feel ashamed of sitting and watching this nonsensical movie for an hour and simply quit viewing it any longer.
This is NOT definitely my cup of tea.
"The Silence of the Lambs" is a good movie, but this is nothing but a piece of celluloid shit.

This is the Hannibal the Cannibal Lecter prequel to "Silence of the Lambs". I liked Hannibal in "Hannibal" because he almost had a soul and he only killed really evil people. In this one he is not a nice guy and he's behind bars helping Will catch a serial killer. Only he's really helping the serial killer catch Will. I preferred the original movie, "Manhunter" starring William Peterson (of CSI fame), but this one is more true to the novel.

So this is based on the first Hannibal Lecter book "Red Dragon," but it was first filmed in 1986 under the generic sounding "Manhunter." "Manhunter" is more subtle, creepy, and atmospheric, but it was also slow and had a weak central performance by William "CSI" Petersen. An ideal version would somehow fuse these two versions: direction by Michael Mann, Ed Norton as Will Graham, Brian Cox as Lecter, Tom Noonan as the Tooth Fairy, Philip Seymour Hoffman as the tabloid journalist. This version is bloodier and more obvious, but it's not bad, mostly due to the fine cast. There is more Lecter in this because he's the selling point, but Ralph Fiennes is actually more unsettling as the killer. Bret Ratner ("Rush Hour," "X-Men 3") usually sucks, but he mostly gets out of the actors' way, which is smart. I agree with those who say it's better than "Hannibal," but not as good as "Silence." Also check out the show "Hannibal," which has an excellent performance by the Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen as Hannibal.

I got two things from this movie:

1. They remade the underrated and far superior Manhunter, destroyed everything that made it interesting, and rendered it boring and laughable.

2. Philip Seymour Hoffman is miles beyond everyone else in this movie.
