From Library Staff

This fantasy series is a great option for readers who crave magic! Despite disliking each other since birth, a boy wizard and girl warrior must come together if they want to survive a mysterious creature sleeping in the dark forest. Recommended for grades three and up.

I like Cressida Cowell's books in the sense that I think they're silly and fun and perfect books for kids, even if they don't have an enormous amount of crossover appeal for adults. (Which is fine! We're not the target audience!) I really want to make a note with this one, though, that you should absolutely listen to the audiobook -- it was an Odyssey Honor Book, and David Tennant narrates, and he is absolutely DELIGHTFUL. It's such a fun listen -- perfect for a family road trip!

The silliness abounds, as well as frightening villainy. Although it might be a bit tired and too full of senseless decisions for the adult reader, anyone who's willing to forgo giving it a close look will have a nice time.

A nice blend of action, atmosphere, wit, and cheek, with just enough character development to keep it from lacking. Lots of fun.

Whimsy and fantasy combine in Cowell's new series. Prince Xar of the Wizards is rather full of himself, even though he's 13 and his magic hasn't grown in yet. He's still certain he's the Boy of Destiny and decides that trapping a Witch (who everyone is sure are extinct) and stealing the magic for himself is just the ticket. Princess Wish of the Warriors heads into the Badwoods Forest to find her living spoon. Being slightly sensible, she brings her Assistant Bodyguard and this wonderful Enchanted Sword she finds in her mother's courtyard. The sword arrives just in time as it is the ancient enemy of Witches, who turn out to be not as extinct as believed. Xar's and Wish's paths collide and combine as they must overcome enemies both familiar and strange. I'm going to have to listen to the audiobook, as it recently received and Odyssey Audio Honor Award with David Tennant narrating.
