Abandoned by her mother, Alexandra Winslow took solace in the mystery stories she read with her father and soon was writing herself, slowly graduating to dark, violent, complex crime stories that reflected skill and imagination far beyond her years. After her father's early death Alex is taken in by the nuns of a local convent, who encouraged her to pursue her gift. Her books are published under the pseudonym Alexander Green, her true identity known only to a few close associates. Through the publishing world and Hollywood adaptations, the truth was concealed at all costs-- but the double life comes at a great cost.
"Abandoned by her mother at age seven, Alexandra Winslow took solace in the mystery stories she read with her devoted father--and soon she was writing them herself, slowly graduating to dark, violent, complex crime stories that reflected skill and imagination far beyond her years. After her father's early death, at fourteen Alex is taken in by the nuns of a local convent, where she finds twenty-six mothers to take the place of the one she lost, and the time and encouragement to pursue her gift. As she climbs the ladder of publishing success, however, she does so with her father's admonition firmly in mind: men read crime stories by men, only--and so Alexandra Winslow publishes under the pseudonym Alexander Green, her true identity known only to a few close associates. Moving from Alex's childhood to her forties, through loss and triumph, the inner workings of the publishing world and Hollywood adaptations--with the truth behind the celebrated Alexander Green concealed at all costs"-- Provided by publisher.

Just like her heroine, Alex Winslow, Danielle Steel may have found her touch again. I did not particularly care for the last few Steel books I read but this one struck a chord. Alex is orphaned at fourteen but not before her father bequeathed a love of mystery thrillers. Alex is a born writer and becomes a successful writer albeit under a pseudonym since she is convinced only men can write thrillers - another legacy of her father's beliefs. She gets a thriller published under the pseudonym A. Green when she is still in college and it is a runaway success. Only her friends the nuns at the convent she lives in, her editor, and her agent know the true identity of A.Green. Despite this she is unlucky in men- -from a TA at college to a successful magnate she meets in London everyone is threatened by Alex. Will she ever find true love? A book worth reading to find out.
