This might be Steve Earles best release to date, certainly on par with most of his releases this century, and just behind his Terra plane Blues release of 2013, in my opinion. I was given the impression this is Steve's ode to Merle Haggard, and if that's true you can hear it in some of the song writing and playing.
Country music embraced Steve when he first came out in the 80's and his pinnacle for them was 1988's Copperhead Road, but County music does not like Heroin addicts,Unionists or folks writing about the Taliban,so he became non Gratis in Nashville. But if your looking for the real outlaws in 'Country Music' this is one of them.

It's unusual for a contemporary musician to be able to maintain quality composition and delivery for any length of time. Bob Dylan is one example that comes to mind. Our Steve is another. A revolting personality - tough to hear him talk, which he does too much of on his o/w interesting Sirius/XM radio show, Hardcore Troubador - but he's the real deal. He just keeps cranking out great new albums one after another. This one is just as good as Copperhead Road and the last one, too. Guy has a line on a good song - great tunes, excellent lyrics. Hope to see him in still another hit TV series. He was great in The Wire and in Treme.
