Excellent film about friendship, music (classical vs. electronic), and coming to terms with the Holocaust. A must-see for those who remember Marthe Keller (who speaks English, German and Spanish) and Bruno Ganz in the supporting cast. Unlike today's Hollywood flicks, there are many long, single takes that let the actors shine through mini-monologues instead of the cheating jump cuts to the cute faces and reaction shots. Great scenery of Ibiza; music that makes you feel; scenes of fishing/cooking round out this enjoyable story for adults.
Directed by Barbet Schroeder in 2015, this Swiss-French drama depicts the relationship between a young man and an elegantly-aged woman who has lived for 40 years on a beautiful island off the Spanish coast.
What a nice and idyllic island it is.
I love its setting and techno music.
Beautiful setting - the ocean, shoreline and sun-drenched landscape of rustic Ibiza - even though the hero is a nightclub DJ, we don't see much of that scene. Powerful acting by a woman who has chosen to be a recluse; as she opens up in a friendship with the hero she explains why.
This is what modern film can be. I firmly believe the library could obtain fewer Marvel comic book movies and a few more small but meaningful films such as this one. Amnesia is visually attractive and the actors are excellent at their craft. The story is profound and thought provoking long after viewing.
