I was one of those people who LOVED the books. No, "loved" seems like a subpar description, not encompassing the passion for the trilogy I felt while reading it. While reading, no lie, I would set the book down (slightly) and say aloud, "I LOVE THIS BOOK". I gave "The Magicians" to probably no fewer than five people as gifts, and to a person, not one of them read it. I was devastated, because I had no one with which to discuss it. But, ultimately, their loss.

So I approached the news of this Syfy series with trepidation. That Lev was involved and gave his blessing (and even appeared under a literary pseudonym in S1 as a "Fillory Expert") was no small thing. That being said, the casting is FANTASTIC (though "Janet" becomes "Margo" for reasons unexplained and unexplainable). Quentin is just douchy enough. Penny is terrific, though I think I recall from the books that he was a redhead. This is less an interpretation of the novels than fan-fiction—the characters and general discernable storyline are cribbed, but after that it is open season. One of the stronger episodes in S1, #4, "The World in the Walls", appears not in the books at all but works very well as a standalone, wherein Q finds himself institutionalized as a magical punishment via Julia. He tells people about Fillory and Brakebills and realizes, "Every time I open my mouth I sound batshit crazy."
