A straitlaced businessman meets a quirky, free-spirited woman at a downtown New York greasy spoon. Her offer of a ride back to his office results in a lunchtime motel rendezvous, just the beginning of a capricious interstate road trip that brings the two face-to-face with their hidden selves. Featuring a killer soundtrack and electric performances from Jeff Daniels.

A classic 80's film, not well known by everyone

Referring to Ray Liotta playing "serious/mean well, as usual", misses the point that it was his first film (I first saw it in '86, and he scared me - as he did Demme). Likewise Griffith, one of her hot, early performances. Remember this film is nearly 30 years old - it was on the cutting edge in many ways, and has subtleties I think many contemporary viewers overlook. There's a reason it is in the Criterion Collection, and that it is championed by David Thomson (as well as David Thompson, whose essay accompanies the Criterion DVD).
When it comes to film, yes, there are better ways to spend two hours...some...but infinitely more worse ones.

I found the acting to be poor. The story line is okay, but overall, I think there are better ways to spend two hours of your life.

Amusing dark comedy with good primary cast (Daniels, Griffith, Liotta). Nothing like an impromptu road trip -- with a deceitful stranger -- to provide for all kinds of unexpected situations. // Liotta plays serious/mean well, as usual. A younger (pre-surgery) Griffith also plays her impulsive/quirky character well.
