"Richly detailed setting, heart-stopping plot, and unforgettable characters." --Deanna Raybourn, New York Times bestselling author

As the Civil War rages between the states, a courageous pair of spies plunge fearlessly into a maelstrom of ignorance, deceit, and danger, combining their unique skills to alter the course of history and break the chains of the past . . .

Elle Burns is a former slave with a passion for justice and an eidetic memory. Trading in her life of freedom in Massachusetts, she returns to the indignity of slavery in the South--to spy for the Union Army.

Malcolm McCall is a detective for Pinkerton's Secret Service. Subterfuge is his calling, but he's facing his deadliest mission yet--risking his life to infiltrate a Rebel enclave in Virginia.

Two undercover agents who share a common cause--and an undeniable attraction--Malcolm and Elle join forces when they discover a plot that could turn the tide of the war in the Confederacy's favor. Caught in a tightening web of wartime intrigue, and fighting a fiery and forbidden love, Malcolm and Elle must make their boldest move to preserve the Union at any cost--even if it means losing each other . . .

This spy adventure romance is one of the best I have read. Well researched, this isn't a historical novel that sugarcoats of what went on during America's past. Elle is a protagonist that is sharp and determined to aid the Union with her photographic memory and uncanny resourcefulness. Malcolm, another spy disguising as a soldier for the Confederacy, is charming and loyal as he begins to realize his feelings are much more with Elle as they work together. They become a lot more than partners in "crime" as they discover a plan that could turn the Civil war. A romance read that will not let you go.

You know that book you never knew you needed in your life? This is it. Set during the American Civil War, this is the story of Elle, a spy for the Loyal League with an eidetic memory, and Malcolm, a Pinkerton masquerading in Richmond as a Confederate. That's right: it's a Civil War Spy Novel. It's also an interracial romance. How does the author pull that off without tipping the power balance in the absolute wrong direction? Very carefully, very cleverly, and very adeptly. There are still issues of the times to overcome, but overall, this is one of the best historical romances set in the US that I've read, featuring wonderful characters, snarky, witty banter, and a true, well-researched look at the time in which it was set.

This is a really stellar historical romance. I tend to like my romances light and funny (and set in Regency England), so the only reason I picked this one up is because it's gotten so much buzz from authors I really like, because a Civil War-era romance just seemed like it would be too heavy to be an enjoyable read. But guess what? I was totally wrong. This was excellent -- the fact that the heroine is black and the hero is white gives their romance a true obstacle that never feels contrived or unbelievable, unlike some of the obstacles faced by couples in other books, and the fact that they're both Union spies embedded in a Richmond plantation is just... so great. They're so well-matched, the the power dynamics of their relationship, which could have been tricky due to the racial politics of the time, never feel uncomfortable -- they are so clearly equals in every way. Man, this was so good. And there's going to be a sequel! A+.
