A movie about the wife of Victorian art critic John Ruskin who endured peculiar emotional abuse in her marriage.

Slow-moving, but in part that's due to the realization and then the quiet maneuvering that Effie has to do to get out of her abusive marriage to the famous but terribly flawed Ruskin. Emma Thompson doesn't have a huge role but is empathetic as the well-placed, feminist friend who helps her along the way. Much is made of the exquisite costumes that Effie wears, but more interesting visually are the scenes set in Scotland and Venice.

A dreary, plodding, dull movie that is not saved by an array of England's most talented actors. A much livelier telling of this fascinating period is the BBC series "Desperate Romantics" and it tells what happens after the dreadfully inconclusive ending of this film.

A very quiet, intense movie featuring beautiful scenery, impressive costumes and understated performances.

Nope. Just Nope. To watch a woman repeatedly be rejected, and resoundingly abandoned by her husband was PAINFUL. I enjoy historical drama, however, this ended at the most dramatic part of the story - the divorce based on impotence. Two hours of insufferable rejection. Not even fast forwarding helped this movie.

The ending was lack luster and left you wanting more of an explanation, but overall the movie was not that bad, it is just an odd piece.

Love period pieces but this story was dull and uninteresting, although the set and costumes were lovely.

Maybe this just wasn't my kind of movie, but I was so bored I finally shut it off after an hour.

An interesting story and a well-made movie - the creation of Emma Thompson.
