Elvis Babbitt has a head for the facts: she knows science proves yellow is the happiest color, she knows a healthy male giraffe weighs about 3,000 pounds, and she knows that the naked mole rat is the longest living rodent. She knows she should plan to grieve her mother, who has recently drowned while sleepwalking, for exactly eighteen months. But there are things Elvis doesn't yet know--like how to keep her sister Lizzie from poisoning herself while sleep-eating or why her father has started wearing her mother's silk bathrobe around the house. Elvis investigates the strange circumstances of her mother's death and finds comfort, if not answers, in the people (and animals) of Freedom, Alabama. As hilarious a storyteller as she is heartbreakingly honest, Elvis is a truly original voice in this exploration of grief, family, and the endurance of humor after loss.

I loved this book so much! It is a quirky coming-of-age story about the process of grief. What is so special about this book is the depth and intricacies of the characters. This is a book that does character developmental really well! I loved Elvis Babbitt! She is a highly intelligent 11 year old (going on 30) who is a bit of a loner but loves all creatures of the animal kingdom. It is through her eyes that we experience the process of grief each of her family members goes through, we discover secrets about her mothers past, and we empathize with Elvis' own making sense out of death and life. Somehow, despite being a story centered around grieving, it is a fairly light read and I found myself completely in love with their world. You will grow to love all the weird and messy characters by the end! I recommend this one for anyone who enjoys a coming-of-age type story that's main strength is the quality of characters.
