Welcome to the Universe is a personal guided tour of the cosmos by three of today's leading astrophysicists. Inspired by the enormously popular introductory astronomy course that Neil deGrasse Tyson, Michael A. Strauss, and J. Richard Gott taught together at Princeton, this book covers it all--from planets, stars, and galaxies to black holes, wormholes, and time travel.

Describing the latest discoveries in astrophysics, the informative and entertaining narrative propels you from our home solar system to the outermost frontiers of space. How do stars live and die? Why did Pluto lose its planetary status? What are the prospects of intelligent life elsewhere in the universe? How did the universe begin? Why is it expanding and why is its expansion accelerating? Is our universe alone or part of an infinite multiverse? Answering these and many other questions, the authors open your eyes to the wonders of the cosmos, sharing their knowledge of how the universe works.

Breathtaking in scope and stunningly illustrated throughout, Welcome to the Universe is for those who hunger for insights into our evolving universe that only world-class astrophysicists can provide.

Nobody makes the great beyond accessible quite like Neil deGrasse Tyson. Here he teams up with a dream team of astrophysicists to feed us their knowledge.

I want to start off by saying this book is a fun, informative, challenging and enjoyable read. That said, parts of it stand out as extremely convoluted and hard for me to understand much like a texts book from upper level college courses. Astronomy was not my major; I’m just a Backyard Bozo with Binoculars (BBB).

One of the most intelligent men I’ve worked with was a Pipefitter by the name of Duff. He could look at two pipes tell you what is needed and how to fix the problem. One night after a hard day of work we sit down for coffee and he asked me this question. “If you could get your car up to the speed of light and turned on the headlights would they work OR would you just become another crater on the Moon?” At that time I didn’t have an answer, but now I think I could give him a good answer. For the answer READ THE BOOK.

Despite the innocent-sounding title and Neil deGrasse Tyson's name on the cover, this is a serious, in-depth introduction to astrophysics that includes many equations, diagrams as well as gorgeous photography.
