This film had a great deal to say and did it at the pace that it should have done.
For people that gravitate to "X-Men" or any of the Marvel Group films, then the pacing would have seemed rather slow and boring, perhaps. Not a lot of special effects.
For a thoughtful person, one can find much to enjoy.
The characters are stranded helplessly on the home front when life everywhere else was coming apart. If you've ever felt helpless to put things back the way they were, you might have a good understanding of that situation.
The story was told with much compassion and sympathy for the story's people.
The acting was sensitive.
The directing was spot on.
This human "comedy" has much to offer to anyone who can empathize with the universality here. It is an everyman tale.
Mr. Saroyan has created that timelessness.
Meg Ryan certainly brought to the tale a classy artistry in her directing. Very professional.

This film is both too faithful to the book--which leads to stilted dialogue--and also has an uneven plotline. At times the small town and its characters dealing with the impact of WW II are engaging; other times, the subplots fizzle out. You do see the ending coming from a mile away. It's also painful to watch Meg Ryan unable to truly smile due to her facelift.

I don't know why this movie was made. It doesn't add anything to the coming of age stories of WW2. Everything this movie says was much better said in the movie Summer of '42.

"Ithaca" is a relaxing movies portraying events in a small town in the early 1940's during WW2. The photography is good, story line is credible, dialogue is good. Reminded me a bit another movie "The Summer of '42". Suitable for family viewing. I give "Ithaca" 3 stars out of 5.

Movies attempt to entertain. Few actually do. FILM is an art form. It not only entertains, but moves the viewer----Good film charms the viewer, connects with the soul. Outstanding film sends you to Google search the writer. Artists don't cater to pedestrian movie watchers. I implore you to give this film a viewing. It is truly superb!

A great story poorly told, Ms. Ryan is not a director yet. Great actors but the story left you wondering what is the point. There seemed to be major gaps in the story line that leave the viewer wondering why the scene was even in the film. What was there was well acted but a story line is really an important part of a film, and Meg Ryan failed to deliver.

I was disappointed in this film. In my teens I had read the novel, The Human Comedy by William Sayoran and used that as bench mark to measure this version of the story. The story was filmed in 1943 as The Human Comedy with Mickey Rooney as the central character.
This version seemed flat. The acting was OK but none of the actors really created deep portrayals that really made this viewer care.

Should have read some reviews but it was on the shelf in the Fort and we just grabbed it. Lasted about 45 minutes and then we turned it off. It was either that or fall asleep. Very slow and given the cast a waste of talent.

One unremarkable movie directed and acted by Meg Rayan. Totally flat.
