More disturbing than terrifying. A constant, unchanging gloom with nothing to leaven the mood begins to pall.

A.K.A. The Colony. High marks for this thriller based on facts about a secluded colony run by a convicted pedophile ex-nazi in 1961 in Chile, after fleeing West Germany after World War II. Paul Schaffer, played by Michael Nyqvist (I.T.: 2016; John Wick: 2014; and the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo trilogy: 2009), a German lay preacher and a former army medic ran this cult behind security fences while Chilean military dictator Augusto Pinochet used the German commune as a torture camp, and hid weapons and poison gas on the premises.
This film sets the story during the 1973 coup d'etat, while a girlfriend, played by Emma Watson (Harry Potter series: 2001 - 2011; Bling Ring: 2013; Beauty and the Beast: 2017 ;and The Circle: 2017) watches her boyfriend Daniel Bruhl (Captain America: Civil War: 2016; Zookeepers Wife: 2017; and The Cloverfield Paradox: 2018) be taken away by the police and follows her efforts in finding him.
The dictatorship was established after the democratically-elected socialist government of Salvador Allende was overthrown by a CIA-backed coup d'état on 11 September 1973, and was in power until 1990.
The five minute bonus is short but worth the watch, but be sure to watch the film to the end to read it's summary text.

This is a true story of a cult allowed to exist in Chile. It was like a concentration camp. Horrific things were done. It was run by a pedophile and the leader of Chile allowed it. It was used to get rid of dissidents and hide weapons.

This is not what I thought it would be. I thought this was a movie about political events. Instead it was centred around violence, torture and an insane and controlling Nazi. Wasted time on this movie.

An interesting and honest film about horrible true events.

This is ground covered before in dramatic film (Missing, with Jack Lemmon winning Best Actor at the 1982 Cannes Film Festival), but this time it's done as a thriller. Some suspense (will they escape?) but more fascinating--and factual--than thrilling.

It's a good one, based on true stuff, which the movie updates after the climactic scene. you won't forget it.

Boring. I did not care about any of the characters.

It was hard to believe that this movie was based on actual I did some research...and it is true - yikes!! Even though most are folks are familiar with the historic overview, this story covers little known events ( I've never heard about this at all!!) - so it was very enlightening ....truth is truly stranger than fiction and considering the times we live in...this well acted movie is definitely worth watching!!

2 stars for entertainment because there was little except the scenic bus ride to hell and good acting, but 5 stars for the original political drama on the heroic exposé of a most abominable paedophile, lay preacher and anti-Semite Paul Schäfer Schneider. Per wiki, he was the founder and former leader of a sect and agricultural commune of German immigrants called Colonia Dignidad —later renamed Villa Baviera—located in the south of Chile. Chilling and disturbing commentary on the brutality of Pinochet's regime. Inspired by true story, see more in "Summary".

One of the many articles on the Colonia and Schafer in the net. The wheels of justice turn slowly in this case:

Knight Ridder Newspapers, Apr. 24, 2002
By Kevin G. Hall, Knight Ridder Newspapers

COLONIA DIGNIDAD, Chile – The rows of corn grow tall and straight at Colonia Dignidad, one of the world’s richest communes. Its timber products, baked goods and sausage, renowned for their quality, are sold nationwide. Its 65-bed hospital provides the region’s best health care. One of the commune’s elderly German hausfraus seems friendly enough, offering a traveler some apple juice for the road.
