It Didn't Start With You is a transformative approach to resolving longstanding difficulties that in many cases, traditional therapy, drugs, or other interventions have not had the capacity to touch.

Depression. Anxiety. Chronic Pain. Phobias. Obsessive thoughts. The evidence is compelling- the roots of these difficulties may not reside in our immediate life experience or in chemical imbalances in our brains-but in the lives of our parents, grandparents, and even great-grandparents. The latest scientific research, now making headlines, supports what many have long intuited-that traumatic experience can be passed down through generations. It Didn't Start with You builds on the work of leading experts in post-traumatic stress, including Mount Sinai School of Medicine neuroscientist Rachel Yehuda and psychiatrist Bessel van der Kolk, author of The Body Keeps the Score . Even if the person who suffered the original trauma has died, or the story has been forgotten or silenced, memory and feelings can live on. These emotional legacies are often hidden, encoded in everything from gene expression to everyday language, and they play a far greater role in our emotional and physical health than has ever before been understood.

As a pioneer in the field of inherited family trauma, Mark Wolynn has worked with individuals and groups on a therapeutic level for over twenty years. It Didn't Start with You offers a pragmatic and prescriptive guide to his method, the Core Language Approach. Diagnostic self-inventories provide a way to uncover the fears and anxieties conveyed through everyday words, behaviors, and physical symptoms. Techniques for developing a genogram or extended family tree create a map of experiences going back through the generations. And visualization, active imagination, and direct dialogue create pathways to reconnection, integration, and reclaiming life and health. It Didn't Start With You is a transformative approach to resolving longstanding difficulties that in many cases, traditional therapy, drugs, or other interventions have not had the capacity to touch.

This book is a load of unscientific B.S. I'm amazed that it's gotten so much attention. The effects he describes have been described in the past as attributable to reincarnation, which I seriously find more believable than the pseudoscientific explanation he fabricates. The author is not a doctor or a psychologist; he was an English major. He might have been better as a fantasy writer.

I found the first part of the book very interesting and fairly logical, however as I continued reading what the author presented just didn’t seem to make ANY logical sense. I don’t think I’ll end up even finishing the book.

This is a must read book. One of the most enlightening books I have ever read on generational trauma. It not only acts as informational using science it has narrative case studies to act as examples. It also acts as a guidebook for those looking to help improve upon themselves with guided questions, meditations, and exercises.

An incredibly enlightening read from start to finish. Although many of these principles I knew for myself & clients I work with as a Therapeutic Coach from a psychological perspective; to fully grasp the inevitable genetic correlation is a fantastic revelation which brings all past knowledge full circle. Mark did a stellar job in conveying this scientific data in a relatable manner through personal stories & workbook-style queries ensuring this crucial learning would be readily absorbed. If you're human, then this is a MUST read book!!

This is an outstanding book, both for therapists/practitioners as well as those looking for self-help to heal from trauma. One of the best I have read on this topic, well referenced/sound scientific basis and well written narratives throughout. Highly recommend.

A good read, gets you thinking about familial patterns that are repeated generationally, and personal "stories" that need to be ended.
