Eleven-year-old Rocco finds himself alone in New York City after he's sold to a padrone by his poverty-stricken parents and forced to leave his small Italian village. While working as a street musician, he meets the boys of the infamous Bandits' Roost, who teach him the art of pickpocketing while posing as a newsboy. Rocco embraces his new life of crime--he's good at it, and it's more lucrative than banging a triangle on the street corner. But when he meets Meddlin' Mary, an Irish immigrant who has a big mouth and an even bigger heart, he begins to reexamine his life--and take his future into his own hands.

Rocco is taken from his home in Italy to work in America. There he is basically a slave living in terrible conditions and “owned” by his Padrone. Rocco’s scrappy nature and innate street smarts help him survive but also lead him into trouble. The hard life of young immigrants in the 19th century is vividly described

The title should give you a clue.....its wordy. Takes almost a 100 pages to get to the pickpocket part. It simply takes its time telling a story that should have immediately jumped into the action. Thick on setting the scene, heavy on the boys' nativity and long winded on history. Good for older adults to read, not for the intended audience of 10- 12 year olds. DNF

Great historical fiction and good for kids. I enjoyed reading "A Bandits Tale". The story line was great and the narrative was fun. I recommend this to anyone who likes historical fiction or just a good story.
