A dark and confusing trainwreck!

This movie is a great for the family. It is an adventure, that I wish I could have taken as a child. The boy in extremely smart for his age. He will make a good scientist.

If you have read The Selected Works of T.S. Spivet by Reif Larsen, your expectations might be high for a movie which is about the same character. What we have to remember is that a movie can never duplicate what one has read in a book, because in the reading, you use your imagination to picture the characters and scenes. And when a character is mostly in their head, this is made more difficult.

There was something too shiny and bright about this movie, which is a surprise as Jean-Pierre Jeunet's other movies manage to have a patina to them which this movie did not have. The actors were all perfect, although Judy Davis sometimes went over the top in her performance. I would not imagine a person from the venerable Smithsonian behaving the way she did. But, this is Hollywood, after all.

I thoroughly enjoy this movie' The little boy remind me of that kid from the movie Home alone. Macaulay culkin. kyle Catlett kinda of soft spoken quirky kid and a stream of magic to make the film seem believe able. towards the end of the movie you're rooting for the kids valves.. ' Rent it it's here at the library. your just one click away from watching cute family movie. 5 stars'

Very dark (some violence, a little gore, and lots of grief and family dysfunction), not recommended for young children (and possible not for older children either).

A quirky, funny tale about a seven year old kid who accidentally blows his twin brother's brains out in the barn and the ruined family that results.

What, you don't think that's a good topic for quirky/funny? No, it's not. Horrible, horrible movie that's an orgy of self-indulgence by some director who thinks he's an artiste or something. Mannered and unfunny with cheap special effects.

I'm on the disliked it/hated it fence.

I checked out this movie about 5 times, finally got around to watching it. I thought it was quite good, about an intelligent child who was different from his raised environment, but was ever curious of his world. Most adults did not understand him and when a tragedy occurs within his family, he takes it upon himself to venture across the U.S. by himself, to accept an award that he won from the Smithsonian. It was interesting and entertaining and enlightening. People are all unique in their own ways, sometimes it takes awhile for that difference to be appreciated. While it involves young children, probably not appropriate for young children, but older children and adults will enjoy it. Canada substitutes for Montana in the film, but very lovely.

Nice overall movie, more than a kid movie, and I think also suitable for younger adults to watch. Incredible views of the countryside of Montana, which you should visit anyway, in case you have not yet. The story of the 10 year old protagonist really picks up in the last half hour, when he gets to the Smithsonian to receive his award. Therefore, if you find the movie slow and predictable for most of its time, hang on, the ending is worth the wait.

Warning: even though the trailer shows a colorful, kid's movie in the style of Tim Burton, this film is very dark and a little too much for younger children to cope with. It is about a child who dies in an accident and how the family deals (actually doesn't deal) with it. A fine acting cast (especially the kids), great cinematography, but this movie could haunt some youngsters. You have been warned.
