Living in the same universe as The Walking Dead, Fear the Walking Dead is a gritty drama that explores the onset of the undead apocalypse through the lens of a fractured family. Set in a city where people come to escape, shield secrets, and bury their pasts, a mysterious outbreak threatens to disrupt what little stability high school guidance counselor Madison Clark and English teacher Travis Manawa have managed to assemble. The everyday pressure of blending two families while dealing with resentful, escapist, and strung out children takes a back seat when society begins to break down. A forced evolution, a necessary survival of the fittest takes hold, and our dysfunctional family must either reinvent themselves or embrace their darker histories.

Of course nothing can ever be quite as good as the original series of The Walking Dead, but this "companion piece" to the original series is a pretty good filler while you wait for another season of TWD to come out. Set at the same time and during the same zombie apocalypse as TWD, this has all new characters in a wholly different locale/environment (think west coast U.S. and Mexico - cities, deserts, beaches, and ocean), and with all new obstacles, enemies, dangers and twists to overcome because of it. If you've been following TWD, the first season of this will seem pretty slow as you start all over with brand-new characters, their particular situations, and the dawning of the zombie apocalypse from their viewpoint. You'll have already seen the same zombie survival techniques used in TWD (they are, after all, the same zombies), and many of these as-of-yet undeveloped characters will seem pretty tame compared to the seasoned folks of TWD (no katana wielding warrioress types, for example, or at least not yet). But it picks up considerably in the second season, and I'm looking forward to the third.
